Landscapes 2008 - 2010
Mary Jose's paintings have developed in the tradition of English watercolour but always with a sense of oriental composition - harmonious asymmetry and the importance of space. Her other main concern is to express a sense of light as it is this which reveals the subject in the first instance, whether it is a landscape, still life or figure.
Her more recent watercolours, painted since she started doing large, strong-coloured abstracts in oils, show the influence of the second medium. The watercolours, while often smaller than before, are stronger, with more intense colour and verging towards the abstract.
